A RAT is a piece of software that allows a remote operator to control a system as if he has physical access to that system. While desktop sharing is “legal”, RAT software is usually associated with criminal or malicious activity. Malicious RAT software is typically installed without the victim's knowledge…Such tools provides an operator the following capabilities:

• Screen/camera captures or image control.

• File management (download/upload/execute/etc.)

• Computer control (power off/on/log off if remote feature is supported)

• Registry management (query/add/delete/modify)

• Hardware Destroyer 

RAT Trojans can generally do the following:

• Control or block mouse and keyboard

• Download, upload, delete, and rename files

• Destroy hardware by overclocking (Overclocking is the process of forcing a computer or component to operate faster than the manufactured clock frequency.)

• Drop viruses and worms

• Edit Registry

• Use your internet to perform denial of service attacks (DoS denial-of-service attack is an attempt to make a machine or network resource unavailable to its intended users)

• Format drives

• Steal passwords, credit card numbers and license keys

• Alter your web browsers homepage

• Silently install applications

• Log keystrokes, keystroke capture software

• Overload the RAM/ROM drive

• Record sound and video

• Show fake errors

• Shutdown, restart, log-off, shut down monitor

• Record and control your screen remotely

• Erase all disk data by formatting drives

• Open FTP connection and start file transaction

RAT was created to hack computers remotely and it is recognized by most antiviruses as a hack tool and hence, antiviruses send alert messages when installing RAT server…but, there is software like Binders or Crypters to hide RAT servers and prevent antiviruses from sending alerts. Even there is software like AVkiller which is used to turn antivirus inactive and then our server (used to hack computer remotely) can be installed on victim computer very easily.
