Millenary beef... 64 or 32 bits

64 or 32 bits

Our resident mixologist suggests the following tune to go with this article... Slainte!

Throughout the years we have ran into several cases of "wasted computers". It so happens that people love investing several thousands of dollars in cutting-edge computers with top of the line processors... but sooner or later their computers will require maintenance due to some error in the system, hard disk, etc. They will end up taking their computers to shops or technicians that lack experience and knowledge...

We say "wasted computers" because we always find a 32 bits OS with a 64 bits processor... meaning that they are wasting half the power of data displacement in the processor... in R&D terms, we call it ¨The Ferrari with an electric scooter engine Syndrome¨.

That is one of the reasons that slowdown applications and the file management process... or at least the computer won´t be as efficient as we technology enthusiasts would want them to be.
Current computers have a minimum of 4GB RAM memory. A 32 bits OS will be wasted approximately a 30% of memory... If we think of a computer with 8, 16 or more GBs in RAM, the OS will only "see" 2.99 GB for every case.

When the processor and the OS are on the same level (64 bits) and working together, the experience will change. We can have 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128* GB in RAM memory and it will work at a 100% as long as the OS is Windows Vista or higher. (*Depends on Dimm slots and OS. For instance Windows 7 ultimate x64 can support 192GB of RAM and if you had 20 dimm slots on your MB you could test the limits of that OS. Considering most laptops use 2-4 dimms figure 4x8=32gb to be the normal limits).

So... how can you take advantage of those 64 bits? Well, they will make your computer agile, more stable, with better response time...

If you want to know more about your own OS, follow these steps:

This is how the your OS "looks like":

 Yes, son... MAC too.
